Class Kingdom Phylum: Cayla Skillin-Brauchle
May 8 – June 5, 2009
Sanctuary Artsite at JDK Design
47 Maple Street, Burlington, VT Tel: 802 864 8040
Open Monday-Friday, 8:30-5:30

The work of an emerging Vermont artist will be featured in the upcoming May exhibition, Class Kingdom Phylum, at the Sanctuary Artsite. Printmaker Cayla Skillin-Brauchle explores patterning and organization through images of everyday objects and personal collections. Skillin-Brauchle’s whimsical, detailed and colorful screenprints and woodblock prints illustrate individual rituals and collective habits.
Cayla Skillin-Brauchle is interested in the personal and collective landscapes we create over time. Inspired by organizational techniques, scientific categorization and family traditions, Class Kingdom Phylum is an in-depth and intimate look at everyday life and the memories it creates. Tinged with nostalgia and idealism, Skillin-Brauchle’s work addresses the gap between how we actually live and what we hope for.
All the artwork shown in Class Kingdom Phylum was produced during Cayla Skillin-Brauchle’s residencies at Iskra Print Collective and the Vermont Studio Center. Skillin-Brauchle has her B.A. in Studio Art from Beloit College, Wisconsin and has shown throughout the American Midwest and in Bangkok, Thailand. This is her first exhibit in Burlington. She is will be pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at Ohio University this fall.
The gallery opening will be from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8th. The artist will also be giving a short talk about her work and process at 7:00 p.m.
